NATTEFROST INTERVIEW BY "ARTIC MIST ZINE" NOVEMBER 2006
1. I suppose that this is not a very original question, but... What is the meaning of Nattefrost and why did you choose this artistic name?
Nattefrost
means Night Frost or Nachtfrost (In German). I chose this name because it sounds
very Scandinavian and therefore fits the music very well.
2. What inspires your music? Do you admire some bands or musicians?
I
am always inspired by the Danish nature. But browsing through the sounds of my
synthesizers can also be a big inspiration. Some of my earlier CD’s are
inspired by the ancient Germanic countries and especially the norse mythology.
3. Your CD "Absorbed in Dreams and Yearning" (published on the Dutch record label Groove Unlimited) shows an electronic Nattefrost. Sequences, some obscure sounds sometimes... How do you describe your music with words?
It’s
always very difficult to do so. I mostly just refer to it as electronic music or
maybe even better, synthesizer based music. I enjoy using both hardware and
software synths.
4. Do you consider what you do as "Scandinavian oriented music"? Talking about electronic music, it's easy to talk about the Berlin School, or the british or american style (for example). Do you think there exists a specific "Danish Electronic Style"?
I
don’t know. I never name music like that. It’s up to the listeners if they
want to do so. But our sound here might be different to the sound in the US.
5. Do you compose, record and produce all your own music?
Yes I do
when it comes to “Nattefrost”. By working on my own I can get the music to
totally sound as I want it to. On “Absorbed in dreams and yearning” Ute
Stemmann is doing some vocals on the track “Visions of a pale moon”. I asked
Tony Andersen and Kent Eskildsen from the band Navigator to help with the
mastering since they are also good friends of mine.
6. In
your discography, we can find two complete CDs... but what can you say to us
something about all your other musical productions?
If you
by saying complete mean full albums, then yes. But there are also 2 EP’s by
Nattefrost. I am also a member of the band Carboneids. We’ve released an EP
and 2 albums so far. Carboneids are doing shorter tracks mostly and we could
describe it as synth music with vocoders, mostly very melodic.
I am
also involved in the recordings for a new album by Navigator.
7. So, Nattefrost Productions exists?
Yes NFP
is the record label of Carboneids.
8. The fourth theme in "Absorbed In Dreams and Yearning" has some vocal parts of Ute Stemmann... Do you plan to include more vocal-melodic lines in your future pieces?
Yes a
little bit on the next album too. Ute has done some excellent intro speak for
one of the tracks. It would be nice to have a track in the future with female
singing, maybe even lyrics. Not too much though since I’d like my music to
remain instrumental.
9. Do you play live?
I have done
some live performances many years ago but only once as Nattefrost. That was in
1996. The thing about doing live performances is that the organisers rarely want
to or can’t pay anything or not enough to the artist. It’s a hard and
expensive job to set up a professional live gig and therefore it’s impossible
if the concert organisers can’t pay.
I guess
sometime in the future there will also be a Nattefrost live performance but at
the moment we’ll just wait and see.
10. What can we expect of Nattefrost for the future?
A lot.
At the moment I am preparing 2 important things. My album “De som
sejrede…” and the EP called “Vejen til Asgård” will be re-released in
February 2007 as a 2CD box set. The music will be digitally remastered and
it’ll include some bonus tracks and sleeve notes.
I have
also nearly finished recordings for a new album. The album will be entitled
“Underneath the nightsky” and it should be released in April or May 2007 I
guess.
11. What kind of no-electronic music do you listen to?
Lots of
music has got electronic elements so that’s a tough one. Let me mention some
artists I’ve recently listened to. Yesterday I played an album by Double
Fantasy called Universal ave. Today I listened to the album by The Gathering
called Mandylion. I am mostly using music as background music. When I produce my
own music I am more concentrated of course.
12. Muchas
gracias! Anything you want to add?
Thank you to the loyal fans for the support.
