NATTEFROST INTERVIEW BY "NATASSJA" MAY 2004
1. When did Nattefrost start?
Nattefrost started in late 1995 under the name "I nattens mørke", but just before the first demo was out I changed the name to Nattefrost.
2. Which bands were your first big influence?
None basically. Nattefrost is not influenced by bands or artists, but of the ancient Scandinavia and vikings who fought in battles. But of course I like artists who we could compare a bit to Nattefrost, well that's musically though. I am very fond of the old 70's albums by Klaus Schulze from Germany. And a great band also from Germany called Tangerine Dream, also the albums from the 70's and a few ones from the 80's. Then there's Vangelis from Greece, there are some nice albums by him too. I like the Norwegian artist Burzum's music as well and I think it's also important to mention that I also quite like some classical music, Mussorgsky for example. Bach and Wagner also made some nice compositions.
3. Which artists do you look up to?
Well, as said before I enjoy Klaus Schulze and all the others I mentioned but I must say I don't look up to them at all. I am not trying to sound like them even some of my tracks have similar parts sometimes.
4. Are you satisfied with Nattefrost's new album?
Yes I am very satisfied. It's very strange to have an album out by Nattefrost now that it's been nearly 9 years since Nattefrost started, but of course very very positive. A few EP's have been released but no album until now, but I am very happy with the debut album and I hope it'll go well and people will like it.
5. What do you think makes music "pagan"?
Well I am pagan cause I am Danish, and I compose the music, so the music has been composed by a guy from Denmark. that's what makes it pagan. A lot of people from Scandinavia are going around believing that they are christians, but of course they are not. They've been brought up the wrong way then and they should rather try to find out about the real Scandinavia and how it was 1500 years ago. We should be proud of it and I sometimes admire the muslims for sticking to their own and their believes. Scandinaves could learn a lot.
6. Do you have any favourite Nattefrost track?
Yes I do! And I guess you want to know which track that is then, hehe and that's a tough one, but from the album I am really fond of "Tårnets krigere" so I think that'll be my fave Nattefrost track.
7. Do you compare your music to Burzum's synth albums?
No, not at all but I know some people might do. Well Musically there are similarites and also I know Burzum has got some of the same views and opinions as I have and since he's also from Scandinavia (Norway), we share some of the same views on a lot of things.
8. Whats your ideology of life (do you have one?) ?
I'll do it very short. I think it's important to get better, stronger and to learn all the time. If it's sometimes necessary to really fight for something. I think it's very important to fight even if it's hurting. We only have one life so it's also very important to enjoy and be a bit greedy sometimes as long as you don't hurt someone too much of course.
9. Which things inspire you to write your music?
Ancient Scandinavia. Also I like to walk in the forests and by doing that I get some ideas for the music.
10. And last question, do you already have any future plans for Nattefrost?
Actually I have. When the new album has been promoted I will try to finish the next release and I can already tell you that I've got a few new tracks which I've finished. The next release will be an EP containing about 25 minutes of music and at the moment I am also working on a Nattefrost video for one of the tracks from the EP. Hopefully I am ready to release it in December this year on Nothingness Records again, cause it's a great record label and the people behind it are very nice.
